This booklet was developed to help build greater and broader knowledge about the main environmental issues affecting South Africa today and the government’s response. It compiles information and facts about climate change and other key pressures on our environment, looks at government’s ambitions and policies to tackle these issues, and gives an overview of the main pieces of legislation that provide for a safer and healthier environment.
This publication is also not about providing ready-made solutions to address current – and foreseeable – sustainability challenges. Rather, its purpose is to provide some background and understanding needed for stakeholders to decide on the actions most fitting their own context.
It includes the following sections: Chapter 1 – Understanding the key environmental challenges in South Africa Chapter 2 – Building low-carbon, climate resilient and just futures Chapter 3 – South Africa’s response to sustainability challenges
The booklet is designed with civil society and media organisations in mind, to serve as a reference document for their work and efforts to engage their respective constituencies or audience on the subject.
