Free our Power! Call to Action in South Africa

Join us in raising our voices to demand that South Africa’s electricity public utility Eskom signs off on Round 4 of the REIPPP for a #RenewableEnergy future – and climate justice!

In the wake of South Africa’s decision to ratify the Paris Climate Change Agreement, we demand concrete action from Eskom to ensure that South Africa charts a course to a clean energy future.

As Climate Reality Project’s global day of action 24 Hours of Reality: the Road Forward gets under way, we invite all South Africans to join hands on 5-6 December 2016 and demand that climate justice extends to every corner of society in the form of clean and affordable Renewable Energy!

To build a cleaner, fairer and greener tomorrow we MUST move beyond dirty coal electricity production to an energy base built on South Africa’s abundant renewable resources.

Enter the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement (REIPPP), an innovative programme that since 2011 has allowed independent power producers to quickly add capacity to South Africa’s over-stretched grid.

Renewable power production is cleaner, cheaper and much quicker to build than dirty coal – and it also has the capacity to create many thousands of jobs across the country!

However, since 2015 Eskom has refused to enter into the power purchase agreements for the fourth round of the REIPPP (also known as REIP4).

This refusal comes at the cost of thousands of jobs and billions of rand in socio-economic and enterprise development that would come out of REIP4.

We believe that Eskom is not being transparent and that its refusal to sign REIP4 is driven by the interests of a few.

Eskom’s continued refusal to take a stand and sign REIP4 is a huge step backwards for social and climate justice in South Africa.

Join us in raising our voices to demand that Eskom fulfils its mandate of providing “sustainable electricity solutions to grow the economy and improve the quality of life of the people in South Africa and the region” by signing REIP4!

Take action now!

Call your local radio
Here is a script for a radio call:
Hi, I am (name)… and I am phoning from (place or organisation you belong to or I am a Climate Leader).  I was watching the 24 Hours for Reality broadcast run by Climate Reality.

I am phoning in today to ask Eskom to sign off now on the fourth round of the renewable energy procurement programme. We know that if this programme isn’t signed off:

  • we will lose jobs,
  • lose foreign investment,
  • we will keep using too much water to generate electricity,
  • rural communities won’t get more socio-economic benefits and
  • without renewable energy, South Africa won’t be able to reduce our carbon emissions.

We want Eskom to spend money on the renewable energy procurement programme, on health and on education in South Africa.
