Enter the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement (REIPPP), an innovative programme that since 2011 has allowed independent power producers to quickly add capacity to South Africa’s over-stretched grid.
Renewable power production is cleaner, cheaper and much quicker to build than dirty coal – and it also has the capacity to create many thousands of jobs across the country!
However, since 2015 Eskom has refused to enter into the power purchase agreements for the fourth round of the REIPPP (also known as REIP4).
This refusal comes at the cost of thousands of jobs and billions of rand in socio-economic and enterprise development that would come out of REIP4.
We believe that Eskom is not being transparent and that its refusal to sign REIP4 is driven by the interests of a few.
Eskom’s continued refusal to take a stand and sign REIP4 is a huge step backwards for social and climate justice in South Africa.
Join us in raising our voices to demand that Eskom fulfils its mandate of providing “sustainable electricity solutions to grow the economy and improve the quality of life of the people in South Africa and the region” by signing REIP4!
