Meet Lorraine Jenks, the ‘little green queen’

Lorraine is a professional speaker and climate activist who manages green directories, consults and runs workshops locally and abroad.

Originating from California, Lorraine Jenks has over 45 years of green experience that began in sustainability before expanding her vast knowledge in hospitality, tourism, environmental awareness and thought leadership. She is also the founder of and CEO of two popular online directories – (for goods and services for all sectors) and (only sustainable and eco-friendly products).

As a specialist in climate change, greening, sustainability and ethical nutrition, Lorraine works constantly to advocate responsible management practices for public and the private sectors.

Only when people understand the “Why” will they bother about the “What” and finally care about the “How” to make better choices.

Her journey began in California in the 1970’s with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) before returning to South Africa to lead Africa’s largest hotel chain at the time (Southern Sun Hotel Group) for 15 years as Purchasing and Contracts Manager. After, she went solo and trained under the United Nations Environment Programme’s Eco-Labelling Project, National Cleaner Production Centre’s Clean Production Programme at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Green Building Council’s Interior Design and Décor, Green Leaf Carbon Auditing. Her Green Home projects at Decorex and Hostex have won 12 awards to date with top honour.

In 2014, she qualified as an accredited Climate Reality Leader with former US Vice President Al Gore. Back in her hippie days in 1969, Lorraine started out with the infant Environmental Protection Agency with concerns about pollution, deforestation, overpopulation. Since then humans have added many more concerns including deforestation, ecocide, Monsanto’s genetically modified organism (GMOs) and the greatest problem of all, climate change.

Although she believes that things don’t change as quickly as we would like, she is a thought-provoking leader doing her best by educating people on social and environmental responsibility. Her recent speaking topics include The Impact of Climate Change on Tourism in Africa, Conscious Green and Sustainable Procurement, and Sustainable and Ethical Foods.

In her 2015 TEDx Talk ‘Gurus have guts. Just do it!’, Lorraine explained her success in managing to shift mindsets in domestic and industry sectors towards more responsible choices to protect our environment, children and the future. Like no other, she gets people to listen and want to transform – or at least begin the journey.
